Canterbury wins SBW's debut

03/09/2010 21:24

Sonny Bill Williams has celebrated his debut match in the ITM Cup with a win as Canterbury proved too strong for Bay of Plenty 28-9 at AMI Stadium in Christchurch.

Williams made an early entrance when second five Ryan Crotty left the field in the 18th minute with an ankle injury.

The former NRL star made a number of deft touches, off-loading at will and making a couple of half breaks. A try-saving tackle on his own line on Lelia Masaga was probably his best moment of his debut match.

The red and blacks were scratchy in the first spell as the game lacked any fluidity but clicked into the gear in the second half, running in three tries to none and holding the visitors scoreless in the second half.

Bay of Plenty will rue kicking away a lot of ball with the wind behind them in the first spell and were unable to find any penetration in the final quarter once they tried to keep the ball in hand.

Canterbury has a number of injury concerns coming out of the game with Crotty?s ankle issue and a shoulder worry for winger Tu Umaga-Marshall the most serious.

Canterbury 28: Nasi Manu, Matt Todd, Robbie Fruean tries; Stephen Brett 2 conversions; Brett 3 penalties.
Bay of Plenty 9: Mike Delany 3 penalties.

Players charged over spot-fixing

03/09/2010 12:04

The International Cricket Council has charged Pakistan's Salman Butt, Mohammad Aamer and Mohammad Asif with various offences under its anti-corruption code.

The players "have been officially notified of the offences they are alleged to have committed and have been provisionally suspended pending a decision on those charges", the ICC said in a statement on its website on Thursday.

"In accordance with the provisions of the code, this means they are immediately barred from participating in all cricket and related activities until the case has been concluded."

Test captain Butt and fast bowlers Aamer and Asif were all named in a News of the World report which alleged they were involved in a "spot-fixing" scam by bowling deliberate no-balls in last week's test match with England in exchange for cash.

The trio have protested their innocence and the ICC said they have the right to contest their suspension, and have two weeks to request a hearing before anti-corruption tribunal where they can defend themselves.

However, ICC Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat said: "We will not tolerate corruption in cricket - simple as that.

"We must be decisive with such matters and if proven, these offences carry serious penalties up to a life ban.

"The ICC will do everything possible to keep such conduct out of the game and we will stop at nothing to protect the sport's integrity.

"While we believe the problem is not widespread, we must always be vigilant."

Tall Blacks beat France

03/09/2010 09:24

The New Zealand men's basketball team has booked a round 16 match against Russia at the world championships in Turkey.

The Tall Blacks have beaten France 82-70 in their final group match in Izmir to finish third in their group, ahead of the French on points differential.

Kirk Penney again led the Tall Blacks with 25 points and told Radio Sport the team's happy to have avoided hosts Turkey in the last 16.

Penney says it would have been awful having to play Turkey in front of 18,000 home fans in Istanbul.

Assistant coach Dillon Boucher says they had the calculators out before the game and knew they needed to win by 12 points to secure third in their group.

New Zealand will face Russia in their last 16 match in Istanbul on Tuesday morning.
